How to state preferences in Japanese: 好み？
Hi,
I am of course familiar with the 私はなになにが好きですform.
But I have a hard time saying
"I prefer ____".
Is there a way to express this in Japanese or am I translating from my head too much?

"なになに の ほうが 好きです" 
ex. I prefer cats. ねこ のほうが好きです。
