This does not necessitate writing elaborate essay plans, but you must think about what exactly a specific question is getting at and how it can best be answered. A little more thinking and a little less writing would improve a great many grades.

"a great many grades" is amplifying "many grades". In other words, "not just many grades but many, many grades would be improved by a little more thinking and a little less writing."
