What to answer to "cheers"? I recently meet someone near my doorstep (I just moved in, now living in a student accommodation). After a very quick presentation he said "cheers" and then carried on his way. Confused, I said cheers as well, because I didn't know what to answer. It is not the first time I come across this word however. "Cheers mate" is a common sentence to here in the street, when you do a little favor to someone (bring out a lighter, carrying luggage...). But here the context is different. I've done nothing to be congrat for, yet I got this "cheers" that confuses me.

Cheers is the same as; have a good day. A British person will have to validate that though.

Alexis, where are you? I would advise you to train yourself to reply "Bye", instead, for its universal applicability. In some circles, girls don't say "Cheers". So why risk it? Learn something safe.

I am British and it is incorrect that females don't say cheers. Cheers has to be taken in context but generally means "thank you" for something..anything...your time..conversation...directions...a drink of water... the usual response would be "no problem" if you actually did a deed for the person....otherwise your response of "cheers" in return is acceptable.
