One to ask is
"What happened in the world lately"
What are the other ways to ask this question?

Informal phrases could be: "What's going on in the world at the moment?" "What's the latest news?"
It would be a little strange to suddenly ask someone what the latest news is as this assumes they know. This one feels most natural. "Have you seen the news recently? What's happening?"
