Shades can lead to misunderstanding :) If I say: 'Family oddities' is it understood as: a) 'every' family has its own oddities b) there are oddities that are familiar to me Thank you in advance.

While there is a clear connection between "family" and "familiar", they are also very different words. "Family" always refers to people. "Familiar" refers to things you know well or are accustomed to. "Family oddities" means quirks or strange habits within a family.

The expression "family oddities" is not specific, but a generality. Nobody can tell you what it "means".
