three years ago= Il y a 3 ans
the general form is "Il y a......ans"

Oui, on dit "...il y a trois ans..." (...three years ago...)

On peut aussi traduire par "3 ans auparavant", je trouve ça plus littéral et peut-être plus facile à retranscrire de l'anglais.
