How to say 'leave behind' in Mandarin? In Cantonese, there is a word 'lauh' 漏 which means 'to leave behind'. I wonder how to say this in Mandarin? My dictionary suggests 落, is this a good word to use? The sentences I want to translate are: - My car broke down, so I left it behind and went looking for help. - I left my jacket in the bus. (by accident). - I left your books on the table. (on purpose). - You need to leave the past behind you, and move on with your life. Thanks for helping me learn more :)

- My car broke down, so I left it behind and went looking for help. 我的车 ‘抛锚/坏’ 了,所以我把它‘留’在那,然后(去)找人帮忙。 - I left my jacket in the bus. (by accident). 我(不小心)把 ‘外套/夹克’ '落(la4)' 在了公交车上。 - I left your books on the table. (on purpose). 我把你的书‘扔/丢’(在)桌子上了。 This translation is not good. - You need to leave the past behind you, and move on with your life. 你需要忘记过去,开始新生活/继续新的生活。 Just for reference.

May I put forward this attempt on the last two sentences for everyone's consideration, further to Hunter's already good answer? - I left your books on the table. (on purpose). 我已经把你的书放在桌子上了。 - You need to leave the past behind you, and move on with your life. 你应当放下过去, 开展新生活。 你应当放下过去,开展生活新章。 The typical native English understanding of "you need to" here is that it means "you ought to" or "you should".
