I assume you are asking about songs in French where there are words and lyrics, not about that music where there is no voice, or there are are voice but no words (see: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/vocalise). :) If yes then there is some evidence that yes, it is useful, meaning the more input in language you learning you are getting the better. But it is just a "groundwork" and sooner or later you have to take an effort and actually look at/read lyrics, then go to dictionary maybe :) And at some point it will be a part of these things that will enable you to produce output in your target language. But really it helps you get a tone and rhythm of a language which is important for your listening skills and later for your speech. * When calling this "groundwork" I don't mean that this is not important or dull. On the contrary it is extremely useful and enjoyable. P.S. An I don't believe that you don't understand completely as at least some individual words likely may be recognized really early both by English speakers as well as Russian speakers, though by different reasons.

I agree with both Mikhail and Negin. Listening to songs can help improve your accent, vocabulary, and listening skills. The first phase, which Mikhail calls "groundwork", I can "brain soaking". You're immersing your brain in the sounds, rhythms, and intonations of the new language. It feels funny and useless, but I believe it can really help with listening and pronunciation, later on! I've been doing it for Bulgarian, and I understand the sounds much better now. Also, it's important to find songs (or maybe just ONE song) that you like and don't mind listening to over and over. In my case, there was a really cool Bulgarian hip hop song, and a traditional Bulgarian women's voice choir.

Personally,I listen to songs to improve my accent.It's also good to be familiar with words & look them up in dic.
