The second sentence is perfect.

The first one only needs a single word change :   I like science MORE than history .

Well to be honest, even though I have a degree in teaching, I was never an English teacher, but I have a pretty wide vocabulary as I have been a reader for over 50 years.

Actually I suppose you can use  'better than ' without any trouble.  I personally would say ' more than ' as it is comparing two subjects at once, and you are choosing which one you like more.
