We had a barbeque for lunch. (Is the act of barbecuing)
We had barbeque for lunch. (Is talking about the food itself)

Yes but if you remove the "a" it has a different meaning. These two sentences have different meaning.
We had a barbecue for lunch.
We had barbecue for lunch.
