The quote "...say that no lad of spirit need want in London..." from Oliver Twist Could someone give me a clue how should I understand that quote ? The bigger part of a text: "London!—that great place!—nobody—not even Mr. Bumble—could ever find him there! He had often heard the old men in the workhouse, too, say that no lad of spirit need want in London; and that there were ways of living in that vast city, which those who had been bred up in country parts had no idea of."

It means that a young person who has character, quick wits, imagination, drive, ambition, determination ( etc etc) need never be poor, hungry or homeless in London. Sadly, it wasn't true in Dickens's time and it still isn't true today.
