What is the best French translation for a 'seaside pier'
In the UK we have over fifty seaside piers, most of which were built in the 19th century. In France, there was a similar structure at Nice - the Casino Jetee Promenade. But this was destroyed in the second world war. I have not been able to find an equivalent word for 'pier' in French. Can you please suggest an appropriate word or phrase. Also, many British piers have large buildings on them, some of them similar to the Casino at Nice, which we call 'pavilions'. This also does not appear to have a French equivalent so what word would be best to use.

An easy-peasy way of finding out most things in most languages is to look up a Wikipedia entry and click on the target languages on the left. I just looked up my home town 'Brighton' and clicked on 'French'. This confirmed that 'jetée' was the only word used throughout the article for Brighton's piers - whether past, present or rapidly crumbling into the sea.

Many anglophile French people also know what we mean when we say 'pier'. This gave me the opportunity to try out a pun on some visitors on one occasion, shortly after both remaining Brighton's piers had suffered a series of misfortunes, from fires, to vandalism to storm damages: 'Les malheurs vont de pier en pier..'
