In general they mean the same thing - "not easy". However, "hard" has additional meanings. It can indicate that a material is solid or rigid. As in, "Wear a hard hat to protect your head."

Difficult is the opposite of easy. Hard is the opposite of soft, but can also be used as a synonym for difficult.
