Your teacher should not teach you incorrect things like that... If I were you I would look for another teacher because he either doesn't know what he's talking about, or doesn't want to waste time explaining things and just tells you that it's the same. 저 and 입니다 are both formal. 저 is the formal way to say "I" and 입니다 is the conjugated formal way to say "to be" in present tense. They're always used in the same sentence I think

As said, they are most certainly not the same in meaning, only in formality/speaking style.
