'Another' is just the two words 'an' and 'other' written as one word. One other = an + other = another You use 'another' in exactly the same way as you use the word 'one' or the article 'a' or 'an'. You use 'another' with indefinite, singular, countable nouns - another sandwich, another man, another book, another country. You use 'other' with all other nouns - plural (other men), definite (that other man), and uncountable ( other information). That's all you need to know.

Hmmm. ANOTHER basically means "one more". Example: I finished my dessert. Can I get another one? Excuse me waiter, can I get another drink. OTHER can basically mean "different". Example: Do you have any other shoes? I am looking for other books that are similar to this one. *Honestly the more you talk to native speakers, you will find them use the word "other" and "another" interchangeably depending on the situation. Some people might say I AM LOOKING FOR OTHER BOOKS THAT ARE SIMILAR TO THIS ONE. While others might say I AM LOOKING FOR ANOTHER BOOK THAT IS SIMILAR TO THIS ONE.
