Most people use these two words interchangeably.
But in reality, there is a difference:
- The movie is the CONTENT/DATA.
- The film is the MEDIUM that stores/contains the content.
In other words, the film contains the movie. Playing the film plays the movie.
Analogs:
A vinyl/record contains one or more songs.
A CD contains many songs.
A tape contains many songs.
A DVD contains a movie.
