In addition to what Michael has already written, working yourself into a frenzy is like spinning your wheels in mud. The more you put your foot on the gas, the deeper you go into the mud and you are going nowhere else! Same for an alcoholic frenzy, but with even less chance of ending well!

When you put yourself under more and more pressure to achieve something, or something provokes or excites you repeatedly, you can end up in a frenzy. A frenzy is a state of extreme intensity, which perhaps includes excitement, anxiety, stress, anger and/or frustration.
Here are some example sentences from fraze.it:
"Investors often work themselves into a frenzy when a highly regarded company first issues shares of itself on the stock market."
"As discussed here before, I always work myself into a frenzy in the rare instances that I listen to sports radio."
"At times, the band seemed to work up a frenzy just to keep Church from taking control of the tune and bringing it into lighter, more atmospheric territory."
