What does the phrase "The whole hat thing" mean?
It's from this dialog: "Ok, look. This is probably for the best, you know.
Independence. Taking control of your life. The whole hat thing."

I'm not entirely sure but it could come from the "Six Thinking Hats" system devised by psychologist Edward de Bono, where you could take control of your thought processes for a limited time to approach a problem in different ways.
