Writing in hiragana
Hello,
I'm starting to learn Japanese and I'm using Memrise.com for learning basic phrases. I've memorized hiragana and am using it to learn more complex sentences like what's your name, my name is, etc... But there are no spaces between words on memrise. It gives it to me with the words clumped into one big word. I'm confused. Is this how Japanese works? There are no spaces?
Thanks,

This is one reason why there are kanji. If everything is written in hiragana without spaces, it is indigest. But japanese words are mostly written in kanji and grammar in hiragana. So when you see a kanji or a group of kanjis this indicates a new word, then followed by some grammar, then there is another word in kanji and so on. So spaces are not required, since you know that when the text is switching from kana to kanji then it's a new word. Of course there is still a bit of mess because some words are written in hiragana too but this is for very common words and you will soon recognize them.
So my advice, and I'm a beginner too is to get used to normal japanese writting as soon as possible, it may seems harder, but in definitive you it will make your life easier on the long term. If a tool is claimed to be well made, then lessons should be organized so that you are not overwelmed with a ton of new kanjis at once, but only a few new each lesson.
Also remember that if you use internet then rikaichan plugin (for firefox) helps you deciphering all kanjis.

HI!
are you by any chance using the course made by memrise? if so i would personally suggest against that.
In my opinion the best way to use memrise is for vocab only, the one made by memrise includes complete sentences which honestly is not as useful as it sounds as they are very stiff and make you sound a bit like a textbook. the Genki 1 and 2 courses are much better.
for forming sentences with what you learn from memrise i would recommend http://www.guidetojapanese.org/ his grammar lessons are amazing and can take you right up to JLPT level 2 (the level required to gain Japanese citizenship).
This way what you learn will be more fluid and applicable to more scenarios.
Good luck!

Yes, it's Japanese writing, we never put any spacecs. However, for the learners, many text books and web pages put spaces between words though it's not our style. Please get accustomed to it step by step. Good luck to your Japanese.
