Is it correct ? I was going to ask someone a question but I forgot. I tried to remember by asking myself this: What was I going to ask ? Is it correct ?

That's perfectly fine, you could also say, "What was I just going to ask?" The 'just' implies that it was only a moment ago that you were going to ask it.
