But it is really weird as the Jeep carrier (also called CVE) and CVL are two different concepts that really confuse me. Any better explaination?

Andrew is right 'these' refers to the Jeep carriers. If you use a pronoun like they, them, these, he, her..............., you need to introduce that person or thing first. In your example, the Jeep carriers are introduced, then referred to as these. The rest, of course, refers to the other ships. I hope that helps answer your question.
