Can someone explain the double 了 in this sentence? Why is there 了 twice here if I only called Little Li once? 我给小李打了电话了. Would it also be correct to say 我给小李打电话了 or 我给小李打了电话 or 我给了小李打电话? What is the difference in meaning, if any? 谢谢!Thank you!

我给小李打了电话了. 我给小李打电话了 我给小李打了电话 我给了小李打电话?(这一句是错误的,没人这么讲,其余全部正确!) Double 了 indicates a continuous action, it is still ongoing.

了 after a verb indicated a completed action. 了 at the end of a sentence indicates a change in situation. In English, this is like "have been verbing" (Present Perfect Continuous). 了 at the end of a sentence can also mean "about to do something if certain verbs are paired with it, such as 要...了, 快...了,快要...了.

1. Why is there 了 twice here if I only called Little Li once? 我给小李打了电话了. Ok, The first 了here means: have done someting, while the second one means the samething.but, most time, you can change the scond 了 to 啦。so,我给小李打了电话了.actually means :我给小李打了电话啦. 2. Would it also be correct to say 我给小李打电话了 or 我给小李打了电话 or 我给了小李打电话 the first two sentences are both right. and means exactly the same thing. 我给了小李打电话--if you say it to native chinese people, they can understand you, but it sounds a little bit strange, kinda of England-Chiniese.
