Camera o macchina fotografica? Ciao! Which one is the correct term for a normal everyday camera? I know context matters but how would you differentiate between camera (of the photo kind) and camera (bedroom)? La camera è in camera [da letto]? I've also seen 'fotocamera' as well. Molte grazie!

Ciao! "Macchina fotografica" is the most common way to refer to a camera. "Fotocamera" is used as well, but maybe a bit less frequently.

the term "fotocamera" or "macchina fotografica" are the same thing. The difference beetween them is in their use: "fotocamera" is more used in the field of professional technical application. the term "camera", in field of photografy, comes from the first camera, that was composed of a closed box (called "camera obscura"). The light, passing through the shutter, was going to impress a picture film. So, camera is your bedroom. The correct sentense is "la fotocamera è in camera da letto" oppure "la macchina fotografica è in camera". excuse me for some mistakes, but I hope to explane your doubt.

If you use the word "camera" people are likely to misunderstand. Macchina fotografica is the correct term, not to mention the term we use more frequently.

"Macchina fotografica" is the most common Italian expression for the English word "camera." "Camera" as a single word means only "room" in Italian. "Fotocamera", originally a technical word, has become very popular lately, with particular reference to mobile phone cameras.
