'Odds' (noun) are like the likelihood of something happening. Here's an example: Jack is 12 and competes in a running race with boys who are all 16. The other boys are all taller and stronger. The odds are that he will lose. Jack wins the race, therefore has beaten/overcome the odds (that suggested he would lose). Here's another example, which I made up (it's not true): 'Statistics suggest that 8/10 married couples will eventually divorce' (verb: ' to divorce'). So if 8/10 couples get a divorce (noun) and a married couple remains together and doesn't divorce, then the couple have 'beaten the odds' (verb: 'to beat', meaning they have overcome the big chance that they will get a divorce, rather than 'lost'). Does that make sense?

You will have a better chance at making a happy and healthy relationship if you follow the advice. Beating the odds, the other side is that the relationship would end. Hope this helps:-)

"Odds" are a way of stating a gambling bet. Lets say you bet on a horse and the bookmaker offers "100:1 odds against" ("a hundred to one odds against.") That means that if you bet $10 and the horse loses, you lose your $10; if the horse wins, you keep your $10 and the bookmaker pays you $1,000. Such a bet is a "long shot." The bookmaker isn't going to give you 100:1 odds on a horse that has any real chance of winning. The odds are "a hundred to one against you." If, by some miracle, the horse wins, you've "beaten the odds." The passage probably refers to depressing statistics about how often marriages end in divorce, and how often couples break up. The "odds are against" a relationship lasting. But, the writer says, if you follow his advice, you "stand a better chance of beating the odds," that is, your relationship is more likely to last.
