Te recomiendo escribir ejemplos con cada uno y pensar en el uso que estas dando en ellos. La razón es porque hay reglas principales de uso y otras que yo llamo "medias reglas" donde dos tiempos pueden ser usados de manera correcta en la misma frase dependiendo de lo que quiere expresar el hablante y como se siente.

Estaba yo leyendo en el jardín de casa cuando llamaron a la puerta. Era mi vecino. Estuvo solo un rato y después se fue.
