In mandarin how does the english notion of "and" work in this type of phrase. I apologize as I don't know any characters, yet, so will attempt to express some mandarin with pinyin. In english I might say: Shall we go to the restaurant and have a meal? In mandarin, I might say: Wǒmen yīqǐ qù fàndiàn ba or Wǒmen yīqǐ chī wǎnfàn ba is there a standard form to connect these like "and"? Or can I simply say something like: Wǒmen yīqǐ qù fàndiàn chī wǎnfàn ba

hi Chad, I agree with Eddie. Here's some addition to the answer: In your case, if we bring up a suggestion of going to a place and performing an action (in the place mentioned), we see the action is the purpose of going there. So it would be "Shall we go to the restaurant TO have a meal." Thus in Chinese we just don't say the "to". Instead, we put two actions together because from the meaning people automatically figure it out. More examples: Wǒmen yīqǐ qù tàiguó lǚyóu ba. (Let's go to Thailand and have a trip.) Wǒmen yīqǐ qù diànyǐngyuàn kàn diànyǐng ba. (Let's go to the cinema to watch a movie.) However, if you'd like to stress the two actions happen one after another, it's suggested to use " ránhòu", meaning "then", written in Chinese as 然后。 examples: Wǒ tuīkāi le mén, ránhòu kànjiàn le tā. (I opened the door, then I saw him.)

Good question, Chad. It does sound to me in Chinese, we don't use the word "and" to connect two events that suppose to happen in sequence. So, your last sample sounds perfect to me. We may say, "let's go to the restaurant, then let's have a meal"

Hi Chad! In this situation,I think we chinese people prefer to say: wo men yiqi qu fandian chi ge wanfan ba! It's more like oral chinese. Chi ge fan, liao hui tian, san xia bu, shuo hui hua, mai dian dong 。 “ge",“dian",“xia"...and some other Chinese unique measure words and modal words can press the meaning of “and"。 For example, women qu waimian san hui bu ba! Means: Shall we go outside and walk for a little while?

In this situation, the latter one is more natrual. As a native speaker, I would say Wo Men Yi Qi Qu Chi Wan Fan Ba. Normally, it's unnecessary to stress "go to the restaurant" , unless you want to tell the other perple which restaurant you want to take him/her to.
