I had up to 900 friends on Facebook.
To me this means that at one point in time or at the peak I had as many as 900 friends but I have less now.
My friends on Facebook was up to 900.
I would say this means that the last time I checked I had 900 friends. Now I expect I may have more, but it could be less.
