ein Kopf vs der Kopf Which article (definite or indefinite) is used with body parts in German? For example, I want to learn body parts in German together with my daughter. I sit in front of her, point to my head and ask: Was ist das? The answer should be "das ist ein Kopf" or "das ist der Kopf"? Das ist ein Mund. (mouth) Das ist eine Nase. (nose) Das ist ein Auge. (eye) Das ist ein Ohr. (ear) Das ist ein Bauch. (tummy) Das ist ein Bein. (leg) Das ist ein FuB. (foot) Das ist ein Arm. (arm) Das ist eine Hand. (hand) Das ist ein Nabel. (bellybutton) Thank you for your help!

For learning purposes I would emphasize the definite article, so that learning the gender of each noun becomes easier. With the indefinite article, since masculine and neuter nouns would use "ein," the gender would also become unclear. Knowing noun gender is important for grammatical purposes later in your studies, so when reviewing vocab in the way you have described above, it would be best to say "Das ist der Kopf, Das ist die Nase, etc." In general, whether you use the definite or indefinite article depends wholly on context.
