Do Chinese call a company's boss “爸” Hi, I have a text I need to translate. And in there, there's a name in English, which can be either a girl's name or a name of a company. The second is logically more possible. But there's this sentence: “(name)他爸离开了水电公司” The name is obviously a female one, but they refer to the dad with a male 他 , so I am really confused. And it can't be a typo, since this pattern is repeated many times throughout the text. Could it be that Chinese simply refer to a company's boss as a "dad"? And then that means that name is not a woman's, but a name of the company?

Hi, there! I would never ever refer to a company's boss as “dad”, and I believe that it has nothing to do with my personal preference. On the other hand, Chinese names can be misleading at times. Sometimes, it's hard for natives to tell the gender simply by hearing or seeing a name. Hope that's helpful!

Neil + 他爸/他妈 = Neil, his father/his mother. Marchenko + 她爸/她妈 = Marchenko, her father/her mother. but why was the 他 refered to a girl's name in your sentence ? probably, because of the misuse or the mixed-use. that's all. sometimes, chinese use 他 to refer to he or she. because 她 was invented in the early years of the 20th century for equality between men and women.(the New Culture Movement in modern history of China) Accurately, the advancement of the status of women happened after 1949 year, the time that People’s republic of china was built by Mao. its history is just less than 100 years. “Women hold up half the sky.” is the slogan existing in that times. perhaps there is another reason that we are greedy for convenience. because the pronouciation of 他和她 being same, we are lazy to press the button "2" that usually selects 她 rather than the button “blank” that usually selects 他 (他 is more usual used)after you have typed the PinYin“ta” well on the keyboard.

“(name)他爸离开了水电公司” The sentence translates to (name), his dad, has left the water and power company. Hence "name" is the father's name of the male person you are talking to.
