Yes you should and follow your passion. Since you are already used to string instrument and know how to read music, I think it is fast to pick up and get yourself accustomed with. All the best!

Learn the guitar. You will find that compared to the Guzheng (a string instrument, right?) it is easy. And everything you have already learned on your instrument will be a strong foundation of every new instrument you learn. But guitar is one of the easiest. I was a violinist for years. I didn't think that would help me play guitar, but now I realize that it was a huge advantage- just like an artist who uses pencils but now picks up a brush. I'm sure you can find good intruments, right now Chinese Fender Squiers are really quite good electric guitars for a beginner. A Fender Squier bullet and a small practice amp like a Vox DA5 or Roland microcube will be plenty. When you get a drummer, you can move up to a Fender Pro Jr. :) Another thought- since you already have an understanding and ear for music, perhaps you should learn to play the bass. If you play bass well, you will always be in demand, people will always want to play with you. (guitarists are like rats, there are too many of us). Classical music, whether western or chinese, teaches fundamental ideas of melody, rhythm, feeling. You will find that very soon you will be able to speak through any new instrument you learn, as though it were your own voice. And then get books of songs by pop bands you like,a nd learn to play the songs. It is a good idea at the very beginning to take a lesson or two from a teacher who can show you good posture and technique- jsut like classical music. This will help you grow and progress later instead of reachign a plateau when bad posture holds you back. Go for it! Become the next pop music sensation!

do you like pop music, jazz, etc? can you or are you willing to learn another instrument? then, what's the problem?. imagine that you are only able to cook chinese style, then you shouldn't try to cook italian style?. whatever you do, it would be nice to let me know the music you do. i don't compromize to become a fan of you, but i like very much to discuss with people that creates music. (i have no idea of music).

Yes, you can join that band. You can try to combine Guzheng with pop, rock or even jazz music. Create a great song with different improvisation and play it proudly. I think is cool that you can play traditional instrument. You can listen to Gozilla's song "Hong Kong", they used Guzheng.
