"Buen día" se utiliza en un sentido algo diferente que "buenos días". "Buenos días" es equivalente de "good morning" y se utiliza como el primer saludo del día, por la mañana. Pero "buen día" se utiliza en algunas partes, por ejemplo en Andalucía, tanto al encontrarse como al separarse, para desear que el día en su conjunto vaya bien. Puedes usar la que más te guste, ambas expresiones son correctas.

As someone already answered, the period of time is called mañana. Buen día/buenos días is a greeting that means good day/good morning. It's a bit weird actually, Spanish and Portuguese consider día(day) as a synonym for morning, dispite it's original meaning.

Buen día and Buenos días mean ' Good morning' / 'Good day's . They are used to as a first greeting and to wish a good day (specially if you use the singular version, Wich is far less used that the plural Buenos días)
