What is the difference between kinezumi, and Risu? everything i find says both mean Squirrel. My nickname is squirrel and im trying to figure out the correct way to use it in japanese. Please explain the differencei was hoping kinezumi meant squirrel, ahwell. but if it is a 誤訳 as you put it, then that sucks, although i have never heard "ree rat"as a term for squirrel, not to say it doesnt make sense. too bad, kinezumi is a cooler word than risu.i some how hit my insert key, i meant "tree rat"

A simple keyword search for "キネズミ" on the WWW answers this in a few seconds. You can also attempt to look it up online in 大辞林, the ultimate information source for Japanese words. These sources indicate that this is not standard Japanese and clearly does not refer to the same animal as a リス. Rather, in English "tree rat" is a colloquial expression for "squirrel", and this sounds rather like an example of 直訳 or rather 誤訳.

I think "squirrel" is "risu", "kinezumi" is not generally. I haven't heard "kinezumi" before.
