Hello Patrick,
-Learn the basics:
the Spanish Alphabet
Pronunciation
Basic Greetings
-Expand on the basics and focus on grammar.
http://spanish.about.com/od/learnspanishgrammar/Learn_Spanish_Grammar.htm
-Cover topics including learning numbers, telling time, seasons of the year, month etc.
-Use online lessons with audio and video material to practice and increase vocabulary.
- If you can afford take some Spanish courses in Spain such as :
http://www.zadorspain.com/?gclid=CLzH8uWw7JkCFYKB3godwlb4RA
- Practice through voice chat and mingle with native Spanish if it is possible.
-Read simple material and gradually more difficult using dictionaries to look up new words.
Good luck :)

Hi Patrick.
You've already started with your interest in learning Spanish. I would suggest a couple of things I did that got me on the track to finally speaking fluently and even writing well in Spanish.
Get you hands on all the Spanish books you can. Buy them second hand and browse through them constantly.
Good book for beginners is "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish". I bought it more than 20 years ago at Barnes and Noble, don't know if it is still in print, it's pretty straight-forward and easy to follow.
Make a friend who does not speak very much English. Start the relationship in Spanish and keep it that way.
Make plans to move to a country where Spanish is the main spoken language. Visit that country over years of time, maybe a short visit of just a few weeks, then another visit of a month or so, maybe make plans to live in that country for several years. Not being able to use English to communicate sure helps in making your Spanish better.
Repeat everything you learn 25,000 times out loud. You'll need to get your lips wrapped around the sounds of the language before you will start understanding what is being said to you.
If you want more details about what I did to get where I am let me know, I'd be happy to share.
peace,
Mr Spears.
