나다 has many usages both as an independent verb, a helper verb, and as a suffix. Its underlying meaning is to come out, break out, or take place. It indicates something manifesting or happening afresh. It is roughly the opposite of 들다, which means to go in, enter, or count as a part, etc. You can think of 나다 as a vaguer and broader-meaninged form of 나오다 (come out). For example, 나들목 means "interchange (in a roadway)" - it means a 목, neck, where cars go in(들다) and out(나다. 드나들다 means to frequent a place: 들다 + 나다 + 들다 -> 들나들다 -> 드나들다. Here's a short list of 나다's many usages. (as a separate verb) - 끝이 나다 => come to an end/close; 큰일이 나다 = comething urgent happens. - 돈이 나다 => come by money (from "money coming one's way"); 석탄이 나다 = yield coal. - 화가 나다 = get angry; 열이 나다 = have a fever; 여드름이 나다 = get pimples. - 불이/전쟁이/홍수가 나다 = a fire/war/flood breaks out. - 신문에 기사가 나다 = an article appears on a newspaper; 채용 공고가 나다 = job opening gets posted. (as a helper verb) -고 나다 => (usually in -고 나서/나니/나자 form) after doing something. 일을 끝내고 나서 퇴근했다. (as a suffix - these are similar to the first group, except that they are integral words) - 끝나다 => come to an end. - 일어나다 => occur, happen. - 큰일나다 => something urgent happens. - 태어나다 => be born. - 야단나다 => a bustle or commotion happens (for something bad or good). - 화나다 => get angry. - 불나다 => a fire breaks out. - 헤어나다 = get out of a difficult situation.
