Which one is correct? (A question about adjs) There's a grammar test and I want to know which of the following choices is the correct answer and why? Children .......... Schools in villages usually get poor facilities. A) attended B) attending I myself think both of them seem to be right.

children ATTENDING this is not an adjective. This is a shortened version of "children who are attending" People standing in the back can't see the stage = People who are standing in the back can't see the stage.

It would be "attending" because it is the verb in present progressive tense.

Two-part response: an analysis of choices A and B, and an analysis of the grammar. Children .......... Schools in villages usually get poor facilities. A) attended B) attending A - Children attended schools in villages usually get poor facilities. (ungrammatical) B - Children attending schools in villages usually get poor facilities. (grammatical) (= Children who are attending schools in villages usually get poor facilities.) Analysis "Attending" is a present participle. "Attending schools in villages" is a participial phrase which acts as a restrictive qualifier for the subject "children." More information here about participles and gerunds. https://english.ucalgary.ca/grammar/course/sentence/2_4d.htm [excerpts] Participial phrases Participial phrases consist of either a past or a present participle and any objects, and/or modifiers . Participial phrases always function as adjectives within a sentence. Example: That dog keenly hunting the ducks must be a thoroughbred. Gerund phrases Gerund phrases consist of a gerund and any objects and/or modifiers . A gerund phrase can look similar to a participial phrase because the gerund has the same form as the present participle. The main difference is that the gerund (phrase) functions as a noun (ie. subject, object, subject complement, appositive), and the participial phrase as an adjective. Example: I enjoy riding my bike in the evening. More examples here: https://www.learngrammar.net/a/examples-of-participial-phrase [excerpt] The boys sitting by the road were gossiping. (restrictive participial phrase) The man standing by the tree is suspicious. (restrictive participial phrase) The girl, sitting in the middle, is my cousin. (non-restrictive participial phrase)

I agree with the above answers. When looking at this sentence, the clue is the other verb in the sentence "get". As this verb is in the present tense, the past tense "attended" will not fit with it. To use the past tense the sentence would have to go like this: Children who attended schools in villages usually got poor facilities.

Typical news headline. They short the sentences due to space crunch. Children who are attending schools in villages usually get poor facilities.
