IELTS HI, folks Could somebody help me with some question from IELTS? Text from the test: This can take many forms. Marine life, for example, is influenced by tidal patterns. Animals tend to be active or inactive depending on the position of the sun or moon. Numerous creatures, humans included, are largely diurnal – that is, they like to come out during the hours of sunlight. Nocturnal animals, such as bats and possums, prefer to forage by night. A third group are known as crepuscular: they thrive in the low- light of dawn and dusk and remain inactive at other hours. Question: Most animals are active during the daytime. Answer: TRUE FALSE NOT GIVEN I thought the correct answer is TRUE, because "numerous" is synonym of "most". But in the book this answer appears to be not correct. Please HELP me!)) BR Lucy

Phuong Trinh and Bru are correct. 'Numerous' just means 'many'. There are three categories mentioned - diurnal, nocturnal and crepuscular - and nowhere in the text does it state that the majority are diurnal. Remember that 'True' sentences have to be unequivocally true according to the text : the facts have to be explicitly stated, rather than merely suggested. The answer to this question should be Not Given.

Is the correct answer "not given"? Because from my perspective the text doesn't give any sort of indication when it comes to the proportion each group of animals represents in total. "Numerous" doesn't imply majority, but a synonym for "many", and that leaves us unable to doubtlessly state that diurnal animals are the norm :)

Hi Lucy, I don't think "numerous" is a synonym of "most". I think "numerous" just means "many" or "a lot" and that doesn't necessarily mean "most" :)
