The night is the dark time. Evening stops at midnight. Sometimes evening is used to mean the time from about sunset till later, but stopping before 12, for example till bedtime. After afternoon & before the evening finishes, by going to bed, or some other event. An evening out, finishes when you get home.

Evening + after 5 pm until about 10-11:59 pm. Night can mean same thing as evenings, or might mean teh time of the day when everyone usually sleeps.

I would say the afternoon is until about 5. Then it's the evening. This is the time after work, when you have dinner. If you say 'in the evening', I think it's between 5 and.. maybe 8 or 9 .. Then 'at night' from that time -there time when people go out to a bar or something. :)

Evening changes every day of the year and from season to season. Evening originates from old English and is the time just before sunset the last rays of sun going down over the horizon. In current English usage it means different things to different people and evening has often become a longer period before "full sunset". No doubt brought about by modernity and people enjoying meals at restaurants in the late afternoon, which we now call evening. An evening stroll in ancient old English times would have been a stroll in the last few minutes before it was completely dark and the sun disappeared over the horizon. Now it is any time from about 5pm in summer and it could be from 3pm in winter depending upon your global location.
