Hi DJ, you have raised a good question. 的 is not optional here if you want to sound native. Im not sure but I have a feeling that the 的 in your example, along with 会, which precedes the verb/adj， is like the "是……的" structure. Hopefully some other people will come with good answers.

Don't expect all sentences said by Chinese be 100% correct grammatically.
