How would you pronounce the name “Yoavi”? How would you pronounce the name “Yoavi” Is it an Israeli name? Thank you. PS: the excerpt is taken from “Breaking the Pig” written by an Israeli author, Etgar Keret. And I’m reading an English translation. the context: Yesterday Dad came, picked up Pesachson(the name of a saving pot) from the table, and began to shake him savagely upside down. “Careful, Dad,” I said to him, “you’re giving Pesachson a tummyache.” But Dad went on. “It’s not making a noise, you know what that means, Yoavi? Tomorrow you’ll get a Bart Simpson on a skateboard.”

Thank both of you.

It has Hebrew origins and is not a 'common' word in English. Best to get a pronunciation from a Hebrew speaker or a Hebrew/English speaker otherwise you risk getting a pronunciation that's way off from from what it really is.

I’m not completely sure, but I believe it is a form of Yoav. English version: Joab, Chinese 约押. When reading romanized Hebrew (or pretty much any other romanized language), the vowels are pronounced, each one separately, as in the International Phonetic Alphabet. For Hebrew, the Y is read the same as in English and Hanyu Pinyin. Most Hebrew words are accented on the final syllable, except for names, which in common speech are usually accented on the penultimate or antepenultimate. Yoav is a name from the Hebrew Bible, however I believe it is typical in Israel to choose Biblical names for their sound or other reasons, not necessarily thinking about the Biblical reference. You can find a Wikipedia article on “Joab” for more information, including the literal meaning of the name in Hebrew. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joab
