what is the difference between "mientras" and "mientras tanto"?

"Mientras" means "al mismo tiempo que" (in positive or negative sentences) or "hasta que" (only in negative ones), at the begining of a temporal sentence.
Escribo mientras me hablas = escribo al mismo tiempo que me hablas.
Mientras no hables, dejo de escribir = Dejo de escribir hasta que hables.
"Mientras tanto" means "entre tanto" or "en este, ese o aquel mismo momento", and does not introduce a subordinate sentence.
Yo escribo. Mientras tanto, puedes hablar = Yo escribo. Entre tanto, puedes hablar.
Yo escribía. Mientras tanto, tú hablabas = Yo escribía. En ese mismo momento, tú hablabas.

Mientras
is a conjunction and could mean:
* "while"
的时候
Sonreía mientras hablaba
He smiled as he spoke
Mientras él estaba fuera
While he was out ....
* as long as :
No podemos comenzar mientras no venga
We can't start until he comes.
* while in the sense of "whereas":
Tú trabajas mientras que ella estoy en el paro
You are working whereas she is unemployed.
Mientras tanto
is an adverb and means:
meanwhile , in the mean time
这时, 其间
Llegaré en seguida, mientras (tanto), prepáralo todo.
I will be right there, meanwhile you get it all ready.
