I decide to summon up the courage to talk to a guy (or anybody) who’s drinking alone as well next to me.

What naturel phrase do people use to make a friend in a bar without giving a bad impression about yourself?

Would the phrase “ Do you mind if I speak to you ?” okay to say?

No, I would not say that.  It sounds suspicious.  I would assume you’re going to try to engage me in some weird topic I’m not interested in.

I would say, “How’s it going?” If you’re in the US, there’s probably a game on, so you’d normally comment on the game, “Who’s winning?”  After that, you can say, I’m Simba, I’m not from around here.  Any recommendations on ...good restaurant, etc.
