Hi!
Are the words "comprise" and "consist" interchangeable?(The difference is "of" only)
The United States comprises fifty states
The United States consists of fifty states

To add to Andrea's answer, the following usage in the passive can occasionally be found, although it might be frowned upon by traditionalists.
The United States is comprised of fifty states. (The fifty states make up the US)
In this sense, it's used with the preposition "of".

yes they quite are with comprise being more formal but both the examples you wrote are correct.
