what is meant by the terms Ichidan verbs and Godan verbs in Japanese? What is meant by the terms Ichidan verbs and Godan verbs in Japanese? What are they? How do they work? Is it important I know the differances? anything you can tell me will help, this is the first i have heared these expressions.@ wozitoya lol not quite what i meant lol but thanks!! I learnt new words anyway!... I believe ichidan verbs and godan verbs is a grammar term relating to all verbs in Japanese..Useless fact I do Tae Kwon do, we dont have dan's we use the word Kup, Im a 5th kup lol

For example: 話す, its stems is す (1) 話さない (2) 話します、 話 しません、 話しま しよう、話しましだ (3)。。。(4)。。。(5) 話せます、話せません (6)。。。 聞く, it's stems is く (1) 聞か ない (2) 聞きます、聞きません、聞きましよう 、聞きましだ (3)。。。(4)。。。(5) 聞 けます、聞 けません (6)。。。 You question for the grammar, it looks like to conjugate the verb form the rule in the first and the fifth.

Ichidan、 一段、 first degree Godan、 五段、 fifth degree The ranking system, use in Judo, Karate, and others to classified their levels of knowledge. First degree is the lowerest, the tenth degree is the highest.
