Umlaut: The dots mean the sound (/der Laut) is changed. Die Punkte bedeuten, dass der Klang (/der Laut) verändert wird. If you don't have it on your keyboard, you can also write: Wenn du sie nicht auf deiner Tastatur hast, kannst du auch schreiben: Umlaut a: ä - ae Umlaut o: ö - oe Umlaut u: ü - ue But "ae"is not as distinct as "ä". It can also be coincidence. Especially, if there are real "ä/ö/ü" in the same text. Aber "ae" ist nicht so eindeutig wie "ä". Es kann auch ein Zufall sein. Besonders wenn richtige "ä/ö/ü" im selben Text sind. s - ss/ß is not an umlaut. But people talk about this, too when it comes to special characters in German. ist kein Umlaut. Aber man spricht auch darüber, wenn es um deutsche Sonderzeichen geht.

Hello 波 仔, Umlaut is a vowel mutation marked by adding 2 dots above each vowel "ö ä ü" ,so it becomes a mutated vowel with a different pronunciation. Many words in German include those mutated vowels as a peculiarity of the language. The vowels are modified to Umlauts in many words as well when forming their plural such as : Hand Hände
