You would say something like "I'm giving this gift to my mom" and then you could also say, "This gift is for my mom." TO is usually more action-oriented, instead of just an idea. Another example would be if you said, "The purpose of writing is to communicate to readers" (it's an action you want to do) or "writing is for communication" (it's an idea).

To soften an avocado place it in a brown bag. For softening an avocado it's best to place it in a brown bag. Here to and for are following by either the gerund or to infinite verbal structures. I'm going to buy milk. (To -action) I'm going for milk. (For -purpose)

Hola Raúl. For - para; by - por; to - a. El problema es que en español, el uso de "a" después del verbo, "a" normalmente no se traduce. Por ejemplo, el gobierno roba a la gente - the government robs the people. Solo cuando hay como una dirección a la acción: Sofía le tiró la hacha a Pepe - Sofía threw the axe TO Pepe. Camino a mi trabajo - I walk TO work, (casi como hacia). Espero que eso te ayude. Simón.

Hi Raul, since you speak Spanish, I think the difference is like the preposition "a" (to) and "para" (for) in Spanish. But there are always exceptions. The propositions always change between languages.
