What does 'dum spiro, spero' mean?

Hello Bettina
In Spanish, which is my native language and the one I teach, there is a saying: "Mientras haya vida, hay esperanza" (as long as there is life, there is hope). As you know, Spanish is a language, just one step away from Latin, so I think this saying captures the same meaning.
I hope this helps.
Profe Freddy.

There's a, seemingly, good discussion in the word reference forums by some people who seem to have a bit of a grasp of Latin.

As Chelsea said "while I breath, I hope", or less literally, I guess, "As long as I live, I will continue to have hope".

I don't have much Latin knowledge, but this means something along the lines of: as long as I am breathing, I have hope (or with breathing comes hope).
I do stand to be corrected though as it is not the language I teach or study!
