Can you imagine when this race is won? (Meaning) I have been listening to the song 'forever young' by Alphaville. In the lyrics I found the following question "Can you imagine WHEN this race is won?" Full verse: Can you imagine WHEN this race is won? Turn our golden the faces into the sun. Praising our leaders, we're getting in tune. The music's played by the, the madman. My problem is with the "WHEN" in that question. I'm not sure what it's expressing. I wonder if it's expressing one of the following meanings: 1. Every time this race is won. (Something like habitual. Whenever it happens) 2. When finally this race is won. (Something that is being expected, or something that is going to be achieved in the future.)

First of all, Congratulations! I think moving into analyzing songs is like trying to analyze poetry. Sometimes there is a definitive message, and sometimes there is just the attempt of a rhyme or certain syllables, alliteration to fit with the rest of the message...you just don't know. I loved this song in Napolean Dynamite so I thought I'd take a stab at it for you, and everything here is a metaphor to life. Not a literal dance, but the journey of life, right? and so is the race...He could have said if we win the race, ...but when shows a little more belief that we'll make it to the end, that it is possible, if he says "when." Teenagers do tend to think they will live forever, its a part of human growth and development that learned, anyway. I understand it to be "Can you imagine what it will be like when we are old." Also, this is a German band from the 80's- there might be something more to discuss, but I'm leaving it at that for now...I'm looking forward to reading other people's opinions here. Great topic!

This song is 30-something years old. It uses a lot of metaphors and imagery and symbolism and is not straightforward at all. A number of the references have to do with the threat of nuclear war - both the US and the USSR were making more and bigger bombs and threatening each other. (The band lived in a city that had been divided up by other countries after a really devastating war. There was a constant threat of being pushed back into war.) A lot of the "Race is won" is oftentimes a metaphor a huge change. Usually it is a metaphor for dying (and going to heaven - it is a biblical reference). Here, it means either "when we're back at war and no longer in a time of peace" or "when we are dying or dead" or it could mean both.
