tone marks for phrase "nali you"
When asking about where something is (directions), my book , which never uses tone marks has it as 那里 有.
When I looked up 那里 on nciku it lists it as both
nǎli and nàli. Which tones for nali would be the correct ones in this case (3rd tone or 4th tone)? Is 有 3rd tone (yǒu) like the normal case of the verb to have?the same goes for saying "over there" listed as
在 那里. I don't know what tones to use for "nali" in that case either : ((

那里 means ：there ，is nàli, fourth tone.it's mean over ther equal 那边，
哪里 means ：where， is nǎli, third tone. it‘s mean where
有 is yǒu, indeed a third tone.

Understanding of simple words
if you want to know where something,you should use 哪里（nǎli ）
if you know where something,you should use 那里 （nàli）
And 那里有book。 (means you know it) 那里有book？（means you do not know it )

where = 哪里 （nǎli） ，the third tone one is for making a question: where is XXX?
over there = 那里（nàli），the forth tone is for answering the above question(where is XXX?) like: right over there.
there is a little bit diference between those two caracters.but one is for question(哪里nǎli ) , and the other（那里nàli） is for the answer.
do u know the meaning of the caracter “口”? in chinese, it means "mouth". so , can you imagine that why we use ’哪里‘ for making a question instead of ’那里‘？
the caracter 有 just have one tone (the third tone) in chinese.
