It is the form of a verb (be + past participle) used when the subject is affected by the action of the verb: 'The e-mail was sent yesterday.' 'The room has been cleaned.' = passive sentences and passive verbs If you compare it with the 'active voice', you'll notice that the subject performs the action. Passive voice is a voice that indicates that the subject is the patient or recipient of the action denoted by the verb. " A letter was written by me". Passive voice is the same as using 被 in Chinese. With passive voice, the subject receives the action of the transitive verb. "The house was built by a new company." "He was defeated by his opponent." "The winning horse was ridden by Tom"
