Semi-formal letter for a Chinese audience I need to write a semi-formal/ formal letter of introduction to be shown to Chinese people. My concern is cultural. I've been told I can write the letter in English because the person delivering the letter is fluent in both languages and can explain the letter. My question is about content. How blunt should the letter be? Should the first sentence introduce myself, including my name? Or should it be about why I am writing the letter? If some one could make an outline explaining where to talk about what that would be great :-)

I think the first sentence should introduce yourself. As a Chinese, if I write a letter like this, what I want to know first is the information about the writer. And it also shows your respect to the people who will read the letter. You can make your audience feel more intimate by introducing yourself, and gain the interest.

In my dealings with the Chinese it pays to be polite, as 'a foreigner' you won't do yourself or your organization any favours by being blunt. Is this for employment?Be formal and of course you should begin by stating your name, where you come from and your objective as this is not clear in your question. For a sample letter just google 'letters of introduction'
